Why & how I workout

After a chocolate filled Easter it's good to talk about sweating again, eh? :D However yummy and delicious all the Easter treats were this year, nothing in this world beats the good feeling after an amazing workout. At least not for me. It's a mixture of pleasure, happiness and proudness. I'm so crazy into it that even the pain during a workout can give me goosebumps of excitement sometimes. As they say, no pain no gain. Working out is a big part of my life and it almost always has been.

However that doesn't mean I don't ever have difficulties to leave the very comfortable corner of the sofa and warmth of a blanket. I do and sometimes lazy girl takes over and instead of doing my planned workout, I stay home and watch loads of Youtube. It happens and it's ok as long as I still move often enough. What does help me get off my bum though are my goals.

1. Feel good and healthy
I know a workout is good for my mind, my heart and my body. Obviously everybody's heart is a part of the human body but I like to think of the heart separately and really tease it. The more I tease the heart, the more it will thank me and stay healthier.

2. Look good
Maybe a shallow reason, but hear me out. I think we all have that perfect weight or state which we feel the happiest at. It's different for us all. For me it's what I'm now. I don't want to loose weight and I don't want to gain it either. Unless it's pure muscle weight :D I've tried being heavier than what I am now and it just felt totally wrong and with it came unhappy feelings and problems with self-confidence. And tbh, a healthy body is a good-looking body. No matter what size or shape.

3. Let out steam
If I'm having a bad day, all I seriously need to do is take a fitness class. Preferably one that includes dancing and lots of booty shaking. A bad day means that I've probably failed at something, somebody's been mean to me or everything's just gone wrong somehow. Working out helps me let out steam. It's always been my way of handling feelings, it makes me forget about them for a while and when the workout has ended and I get back to them, they don't seem like such a big problem as they did before.

4. Social aspect
I usually workout where I work and one thing I love about my job is the people there. So it's always nice to go there and have a bit of a small talk before or after a workout. Also the reason I like doing my workouts somewhere else than home is that I need a bit of group pressure to do my best.

If I look at a normal week in my calendar I'd say I workout 3 to 5 times a week. My most beloved way of working out are fitness classes. To me, there's nothing quite like them. And as I said, a little group pressure can do wonders. I also try to do my gym routine at least once a week. I don't do heavy weights but instead love doing all things bodyweight. My absolute fave thing to do at the gym atm is TRX training. Every once in a while I also like to try something different and spice up my week of workouts. I like aerial yoga, squash and when the weather is right and my mind is set on it, running.

Why do you workout?
How do you workout?

  1. love this post! working out has become something i love recently:) hope you had a good weekend:) xx

    1. Thanks Em :) so glad to hear you're enjoying it atm! :) it does make you feel pretty good! xxx

  2. Love this, working out really helps me with my stress levels around exam times :) Also your gym outfit is super cute!

    1. Thanks Holly :) totally agreed! it's the best feeling ever when you can leave the exams behind for a while and go workout and think about something else <3 xxx

  3. I don't think it is shallow to want to look good. I mean everyone wants to, why would we all wear make up etc then? What I like about going to the gym is that it is my own time to myself to think and I am doing everything for me. I currently go three times a week but I am on no special diets or anything. I love your jogging pants too by the way!

    1. Good point Ellen! :) I like it.
I also know that feeling. I love to just put my music on, forget about the world and concentrate on the workout. The harder the workout, the easier it is to forget about the surrounding world :D
      Pants are by Nike :)
Thanks for the great comment lovely! xxx

  4. I cannot stand the gym, it doesn't motivate me in any way, but I LOVE classes, just sucks I don't get to go to them due to childcare reasons, there is no good ones 9am-11.30am when I am child free! lol What I do love now though is swimming. I try to go 2-3 times a week, will swim a Km typically. Really enjoy it :)

    1. It's so great that you've found swimming! I think it's the most important thing to find a way to exercise that you enjoy. You don't have to go to the gym or running just because everybody else does. So glad that you've find your thing :)
And I feel you with the gym thing. I have a gym routine but it's all about bodyweight training. I can't stand the machines or even free weights. I just get so bored of them. I need a quick routine with lots of variation. Bodyweight training is amazing because basically whatever you do, you are using a lot of muscles at the same time!
Thanks for popping by babe <3 xxx

  5. love the post!

  6. There is absolutely nothing vain about wanting to look good, as long as it's not the only reason! It's good to want to be healthy and to be able to live a long and strong life. I, like you love group fitness classes at the gym because they motivate me more: I love Vinyasa yoga and Zumba, but I don't have a gym membership right now, so I work out at home. For strength training, I do these 80's videos called The FIRM (they actually have newer ones, but the older ones are much more challenging, and they have given me stronger muscles because it's interval between cardio and heavy weights to 80's music, crazy hair and lots of leotards and legwarmers), barre, yoga, pilates and kettlebells. I also have a treadmill that has helped me lose weight many times, so I gotta start using them again :D

    1. Good point Hannah :) and so true. And as I said, a healthy body is a good looking one so I guess they go hand in hand after all :)
Oh my, the 80's videos sound proper groovy! Especially the crazy hair and leg warmers make me giggle a bit though. So cool!
I tried barre in January when I was in London and I absolutely loved it! As I did a little bit of ballet when I was younger, it brought back lovely memories to me. I loved all the stretching out <3
Aaa I just loved your comment. Got me all excited after a hard Monday <3 :) xxx

  7. What an excellent and inspiring post, Emma! You look so healthy and radiant girl, plus I absolutely adore your work out clothes! Very stylish! :)I must say I'm more of a long walk with my dog kinda girl, but I do work out maybe 1 or 2 times a week, but more of a push ups, crunches, kind of thing. I am glad I can still stay helathy without doing sports, as I am a very un-co at sports kinda girl ahahaha :) Great post, loved it xxxx

    1. Thanks Rosie darling!
It's actually more important to be physically active in general than to do sports hardcore. It's a big problem nowadays that people tend to sit too much and be way too physically inactive. If you sit for many hours a day, and hour of exercise will of course help but it won't take away all that time spent sitting.
So you're way of doing things sounds really great! :) we don't all have to like sports. Just as long as you don't sit on your bum all day every day :D
Thanks for popping by lovely <3 xxx

  8. Working out has become a daily routine for me since I decided to become a police officer, but I alternate workouts so that I'm not doing the same thing every day. When I dont feel like leaving the warm comfort of my living room, I'll do yoga and Pilates, or I'll use a fitness app called Seven, which gives a workout in seven minutes.
I've often thought about going to a military fitness boot camp, but the pain from my endometriosis means I can't always complete a full session, so I opted for Clubbercise, which is like Zumba but to old dance floor classics, and I love it! :)

  9. I work out pretty much for the same reasons you do, and I am looking forward to being able to do it once again when I get the clearance from my obgyn. At the moment I am sticking to walks pushing the pram, as it is all I can do at the moment.

  10. You know, I truly believe that this has motivated me to get out and do more! Sometimes I go on the odd walk, but I really need to push to do it a bit more often! Thank you!xx

    Check out my recent?

  11. I seriously lost my motivation to workout. I have to lose 3 kg until the end of April so I can fit into my wedding dress and I can't seem to do it, also after work I am so tired and lazy to do anything. Looking good and feeling good are what I care the most, I should focus on them for the next 4 weeks :)
Also you look so fit! Have a great day, sweetie! xx

  13. I need to be in your class, sweetie. That would give me just enough motivation. I have been slacking off so much and I have no idea why. I think I am a little stressed about the whole move & kind of find my comfort in sweeties (soooo bad!!!). I need to take a proper advantage of my membership!!
